Tuesday, March 2, 6:30 p.m.
The National Education Association’s eleventh annual “Read Across America” day falls on Dr. Seuss’s 105th Birthday, and aims to celebrate the fun and value of reading. In the words of the good doctor: “the more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn the more places you’ll go.” NCPL and students from Casper College’s Children’s Literature Class will present a fun family event to celebrate “Read Across America,” including games and activities, stories read by the Cat in the Hat, and a new book for each child to take home.
Her MySpace and Facebook pages get thousands of hits from teens, who strongly identify with the struggles described in her books. The American Library Association selected Impulse as one of its 2008 ALA Best Books for Young Adults and Glass as a 2008 ALA Top Ten for Young Adults. When she visits directly with students, Hopkins writes: “A major goal is reaching out to young adults through my novels, letting them know they’re not alone in their problems and discussing ways to make better decisions than my protagonists often do.”

Retrieving the Past: Photos from the Archives
Now on View
These 68 images are highlights from the digital collections of Jack Richard, Charles Belden and the Buffalo Bill Online Archives. The photographers Richard and Belden each captured moments of energy and action in their respective genres. Richard, a photographer from Cody, worked in the Yellowstone area from the 1940s to the 1980s, where his crisp, superbly composed images captured the Western way of life. Belden’s images were taken in the 1920s and 1930s on the legendary Pitchfork Ranch at the base of the spectacular Absaroka Mountains near Meeteetse, Wyoming. By photographing cowboys and cattle against this spectacular backdrop, he created some of the classic images of the American West.
The historic photographs taken from the Buffalo Bill Online Archive show the changing face of William F. “Buffalo Bill” Cody (1846-1917) from young man living and working on the frontier to Wild West entrepreneur to aging businessman. Cody has been call one of the most photographed figures of the 19th and early 20th century – and the Buffalo Bill Archive is indeed proof to that claim.
